Prof. Alabi Advocates Merger of Professional Universities

The immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies in Accra has recommended the establishment of one big professional University.

Professor Joshua Alabi says institutions like Ghana Institute of Languages, Institute of Local Government, Ghana Institute of Journalism, NAFTI and University of Professional Studies should be merged into one school, with satellite campuses across the country.

There’ve been concerns about performance of Ghanaian universities in globally recognised rankings. Prof. Alabi says merging some of the schools will “cut down on overhead cost but also enhance global ranking because of potential increase in research output”.

The respected scholar made these known at 3rd Baraka Policy Institute (BPI) National Lecture at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences on Thursday. It was on the theme; “ENSURING INCLUSIVE AND EQUITABLE QUALITY HIGHER EDUCATION IN GHANA: THE KEY ISSUES”.
