The newly constituted leadership of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has been officially sworn into office at a brief ceremony organised by the Office of the Dean of Students.
The swearing-in was followed by a one-day orientation workshop aimed at equipping the new executives with essential leadership tools, skills, and knowledge to function effectively.
Administering the oath of office, the Dean of Students, Dr. Mrs. Philomena Dadzie, urged the new SRC leadership to uphold the highest standards of integrity, unity, and transparency.
She advised them to draw a master plan outlining clear, measurable goals and to be prudent in managing SRC resources.
“You must be vigilant in the use of SRC funds, save as much as possible, and undertake a meaningful project that will leave a legacy for future generations,” Dr Mrs Dadzie advised. “Change the narrative of the SRC always being associated with the misuse of funds.”
For his part, Mr. Richard Quashigah, a lecturer at the Department of Communication Studies, stressed the importance of collaboration and leadership grounded in purpose, encouraging the executives to embrace servant leadership and prioritise the interests of the student body.
He challenged them to make a positive impact within their limited two-month tenure by adopting a problem-solving mindset and consolidating the strengths and vision of their respective groups.
“Effective leadership is not judged by the duration but by the impact made within that period,” Mr Quashigah stated.
The Vice Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Anthony Kumasey, also took the new executives through ethical and impactful leadership.
He highlighted ethical responsibilities, common dilemmas in SRC leadership, and practical strategies the new administration can adopt for ethical decision-making.
Mr Kumassey charged the leaders to represent the student body fairly, manage conflicts of interest wisely, and handle power responsibly. “You have been elected to serve, not to lord over the students,” he said.
The new interim SRC leadership is led by John Armah as President with Fiifi Bentum Welsing-Jones, Johnny Hugo Travira and Mohammed Akbar Husien as Vice Presidents.
