The Faculty of Management Studies of the University of Professional Studies, Accra has donated items worth over five thousand cedis (Gh₵ 5000.00) to the Village of Hope Orphanage at Gomoa Fete in the Central Region of Ghana.
The donation which took place on Thursday, March 28, 2019, forms part of the Faculty’s Week celebrations and was also geared towards inculcating the spirit of humanitarianism and sense of volunteerism in the students.
Presenting the items, the Dean of the Faculty, Mrs Fidelis Quansah revealed that her division has monitored the excellent management of the facility over the years and deemed it prudent and appropriate to give the managers a push.
“We believe that as a University [UPSA] we need to make an impact in the lives of people through community service. We were however also meticulous in selecting an orphanage that we could actually make this impact in the lives of the orphans and not enriching the pockets of the caretakers as seen elsewhere,” she stressed.
Mrs Quansah also said although the idea for the donation was birthed by her and her supporting staff, the students took responsibility for the cost associated with it and commended them for contributing to towards a worthy cause.
The items donated included bags of rice, beans, gari, assorted drinks, cooking oil, packs of biscuit and toiletries. Others were cartons of milk, boxes of fish and some dairy products.
The Director of the Orphanage, Mr Kweku Sarkodie, who received the items, thanked the University for the kind gesture. He said the “surprise support” shown to the children would go a long way to ‘wipe their tears’ and bring smiles back on their faces. But, like Oliver Twist, Mr Sarkodie called on the management and students of the Faculty to make the outreach a yearly one.
The orphans were seen visibly elated at the sight of the items as they sang and cheered the UPSA entourage in appreciation to the empathy shown them. Also present was the owner of Hope Village, Mr Fred Asare who called for more of such gestures from other philanthropists and academic institutions.
In attendance were the Vice Dean, Dr Emmanuel Selase Asamoah, Dr Andrews Akolaa (HoD, Marketing), Dr Ernest Mensah Abraham (HoD, Business Administration), Beatrice Agyapong (Faculty Officer) as well as other lecturers and leaders of the various students’ union of the Faculty.
