ABSA Bank pledges support for Vice-Chancellor’s faculty-authored textbooks initiative

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, has paid a courtesy call on the management of ABSA Bank Ghana as part of his stakeholder engagements.

Speaking during the meeting on January 27, Prof Mawutor outlined his short-term vision for the university, key among which is the development of faculty-authored course books to enhance teaching and learning for students.

He explained that the initiative aims to showcase the untold stories of local businesses, enriching the academic landscape with materials that accurately reflect the realities of Ghanaian businesses and the broader economy.

Professor Mawutor appealed to ABSA Bank for support, stating that the collaboration with the multinational bank will not only promote local businesses but also foster a deeper understanding of their operations.

“The development of faculty-authored textbooks with local content will help provide students with more relevant, contextually rich resources that align with the challenges and opportunities within our local industries,” Prof. Mawutor said.

The Vice-Chancellor also emphasized the importance of integrating technology into the partnership, suggesting that UPSA students could develop technology applications tailored to meet the specific needs of ABSA.

“This initiative would also provide students with hands-on experience in solving real-world problems while strengthening the ties between academia and industry,” he said.

“It will empower them to contribute to the development of innovative solutions that are directly applicable to the banking sector.”

The MD of ABSA Bank Ghana, Mr. Edward Nartey Botchway, expressed his full support for the vice-chancellor’s vision and reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to furthering their long-standing relationship with UPSA.

“UPSA will find in ABSA an eager partner,” Mr Botchway remarked. “We want to understand the priorities of UPSA and how we can support them. We are excited to support UPSA’s local content textbook initiative.”

Mr. Botchway also announced the bank’s commitment to partnering with UPSA in areas of internship, scholarship, job opportunities for students as well as industry-focused research collaboration that will ensure UPSA’s academic programs are aligned with the evolving needs of the business world.
