The University of Professional Studies Alumni Association (UPSAA) has organized its maiden Alumni Public Lecture on the theme: “Sustainable Leadership: The Panacea for Modern-day Political Corruption in Africa.”
The Alumni Lecture will be an annual event will have industrious alumni of the University leading discussions on topical issues confronting Ghana’s economy.
Launching the Lecture was Prof. Alabi, the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of UPSA explained the concept of sustainable leadership as a collective action that can bring positive change to people when both leaders and citizens agree to fight for a common goal. He said, “often, we blame leaders without realizing leadership is what leaders and members do together in a given context to bring about change.”
He urged that systems be put in place to ensure sustainable leadership, giving instances like the Office of the Special Prosecutor, which he indicated could help the country discipline public office leaders and get them to think and act in the line with the constitution. In addition, he said auditors should periodically audit public leaders before they leave office to ensure transparency in their work.
According to Mr George Winful, Deputy Auditor General, who spoke on behalf of the Auditor General, corruption impedes economic growth by discouraging foreign and domestic investment, lowering quality of infrastructure, decreasing tax revenue and increasing brain drain.
Mr Winful expressed gratitude to Prof. Joshua Alabi, immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University for his transformational leadership during his tenure of office.
The Lecture was attended by Management and alumni of the University such as Registrar, UPSA, Dr. Seidu M. Mustapha, Director, Public Affairs, Mr. J.S.K Agbenyo, Director of Finance, Rev. J.K. Antwi, HoD, Marketing Department, Dr. Andrews Akorla, First Vice-President, UPSA Alumni Association, Mr. Richard Ohene Barnor and Treasurer, UPSA Alumni Association, Mr. Ahmed Yusif.
