Students of the MBA Total Quality Management programme at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), have taken quality advocacy beyond the classroom through a community sensitisation campaign on the importance of accurate measurement in everyday life and business. The outreach, held on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, formed part of activities to commemorate World Metrology Day 2026.
Led by Dr Akorfa Wuttor, the students engaged traders, consumers, motorists, business operators and sections of the public on the relevance of metrology, the science of measurement, to fairness, safety, quality assurance and informed decision-making.
The campaign was organised under the global theme, “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making,” which underscored the role of reliable measurements in supporting evidence-based policy, consumer protection, industrial development, trade facilitation and public confidence.
As part of the outreach, the students undertook radio discussions, online sensitisation activities, market education, visits to fuel filling stations and industrial organisations, as well as seminar-style engagements. These activities were designed to demonstrate how accurate measurements, calibrated equipment and certified weighing systems contribute to transparency and accountability in commercial and industrial transactions.
At the markets, the students interacted with traders and consumers on the need to use standard weighing and measuring instruments to promote fairness in buying and selling. They also highlighted the importance of calibration in preventing measurement errors that may affect pricing, quality control and consumer trust.
At selected fuel filling stations and business locations, the sensitisation focused on the role of periodic calibration, regulatory compliance and standardised measurement practices in protecting both service providers and consumers.
Dr Wuttor commended the students for demonstrating initiative, professionalism and commitment to public education. She noted that metrology remains central to national development because it supports reliable trade, manufacturing, healthcare, scientific research and effective regulation.
She further observed that the exercise offered the students a practical opportunity to connect classroom learning in Total Quality Management to real-life quality systems and public-interest advocacy.
World Metrology Day is jointly promoted by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures and the International Organisation of Legal Metrology to advance global awareness of harmonised measurement standards and best practices.
The initiative reflects UPSA’s commitment to practical learning, community engagement and the development of professionals who can apply knowledge to address societal needs. It also reinforced the University’s distinctive blend of scholarship with professionalism by empowering students to contribute meaningfully to quality improvement and national development.
