UPSA Inaugurates ICAG Students’ Association to Bridge Accounting Education and Professional Practice

The Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has inaugurated the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG) Students’ Association, UPSA Chapter, to strengthen professional development, industry engagement and ethical grounding among accounting students.

The inauguration, held on Wednesday, 6 May 2026, brought together faculty, students and staff, marking another important step in the University’s commitment to producing future-ready accounting professionals.

In her welcome address, the Director of IPS, Prof. Fidelis Quansah, described the establishment of the Association as timely and strategic, noting that it would provide students with a structured platform for learning beyond the classroom.

She said the Association would create opportunities for networking, mentorship, leadership development and professional growth, while helping to nurture the next generation of accountants.

“Today marks more than just the launch of an association; it signifies a commitment to building a community of future accountants equipped with the skills, values and networks necessary for success,” Prof. Quansah said.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Antwi, Associate Professor of Accounting, encouraged students to take full advantage of the Chartered Accountant programme offered by ICAG.

He noted that accounting is a profession anchored on trust and therefore requires practitioners to uphold the highest standards of integrity, accountability and ethical conduct.

Prof. Antwi said the training of future accountants must go beyond technical competence to include strong ethical formation, describing accountants as “custodians of public trust.”

He added that empowering students for the profession requires the continuous integration of ethics into academic training, the promotion of mentorship and a commitment to lifelong learning.

“It is not just about preparing for a profession, but preparing students for the responsibilities that come with it,” he said.

The Chief Executive Officer of ICAG, Mr Eric Oduro Osae, expressed delight at returning to UPSA, recalling his personal connection to the former Institute of Professional Studies as an alumnus.

He described the inauguration as the beginning of a structured and mutually beneficial relationship between ICAG and the University, aimed at connecting students to experienced professionals and exposing them to real-world opportunities in the accounting profession.

“This Association creates a platform to expose students to real-world opportunities while instilling the discipline and ethical values required to thrive in the accounting profession,” Mr Oduro Osae stated.

He said members of the Association would benefit from internship and practical training opportunities, access to professional development programmes, mentorship and financial support mechanisms designed to fast-track their qualification as Chartered Accountants.

The inauguration of the ICAG Students’ Association, UPSA Chapter, is expected to contribute significantly to the development of competent, ethical and industry-ready graduates, while reinforcing UPSA’s distinctive mandate of combining scholarship with professionalism.
