UPSA Vice-Chancellor pays courtesy call on IGP

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor has paid a courtesy call on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, at the Police Headquarters in Accra.

The visit aimed to deepen the existing relationship between UPSA and the Ghana Police Service while exploring new areas of collaboration and mutual benefit.

Discussions focused on security in and around the UPSA campus, especially as the university prepares to welcome fresh students for the 2024/2025 academic year.

Prof Mawutor disclosed that UPSA had issued a record number of admissions this year, with approximately 10,000 newly admitted students expected to report to campus in February.

He highlighted the security challenges this would present and emphasised the need for enhanced safety measures.

“As part of our preparations, we are committed to ensuring the safety of all students throughout their stay on campus,” Prof Mawutor said.

The Vice-Chancellor also outlined his vision for the university, emphasising the importance of leveraging Information Technology and computer literacy to equip students with the necessary skills to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital economy.

“As part of my short-term vision, we want to enhance IT education and ensure our students are well-prepared for the evolving job market,” he added.

Dr. Dampare, an alumnus of UPSA, warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed his appreciation for the visit, describing it as “humbling.”

He credited UPSA for shaping his perspective and equipping him with critical thinking skills that have been instrumental in his life and career.

“UPSA shaped me into a critical thinker, a doer, and helped me develop a different perspective on life, ultimately making me who I am today,” Dr Dampare remarked.

Responding to the Vice-Chancellor’s concerns about campus security, Dr. Dampare assured the delegation of the Police Service’s commitment to enhancing security within and around UPSA.

He announced plans to increase police visibility on campus and reaffirmed efforts to operationalise the UPSA Police Station, which is ready for commissioning.

The IGP also pledged his continued support to the Vice-Chancellor, encouraging him to remain focused as he leads the university.

The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by the Registrar, Mrs Lorraine Gyan; Mr Nicholas Adjei, Director of Finance; Professor Samuel Antwi, Pro Vice-Chancellor (RIKT); and Mr Emmanuel Freeman Kwade, Senior Media Officer.
