The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, has officially handed over a canopy extension project to the University’s mosque, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to inclusivity and the welfare of its diverse community. At a brief ceremony held on Friday, 10 April 2026, at the UPSA Mosque, the project was presented as a practical response to the growing demand for prayer space on campus.
The intervention follows increasing pressure on the existing mosque facility, which has become inadequate to accommodate the rising number of worshippers, particularly during peak prayer periods. The canopy extensions are expected to expand the available prayer space and improve comfort for students, staff, and other users of the facility.
The handover ceremony was attended by the Vice-Chancellor, the University Chaplain, the Chief Imam, the Director of Finance, and the Director of Works and Housing, underscoring the collaborative effort between religious leadership and University Management in bringing the project to fruition.

In his remarks, Prof. Mawutor reiterated UPSA’s commitment to serving the needs of all members of its community in a fair and inclusive manner. He noted that, as a secular institution, the University remains mindful of the importance of responding equitably to the legitimate welfare and faith-based needs of its diverse population.
Responding on behalf of the mosque, the Chief Imam, Dr Mustapha Iddrisu, expressed profound appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor and University Management for the intervention. He observed that the additional canopy structures would help reduce congestion during prayer times and significantly improve the worship experience for mosque users. He also offered prayers for the continued progress of the University and for the leadership of its Management.

Delivered in line with established institutional procedures, the project reflects effective coordination across key administrative units of the University. Beyond improving the mosque’s functionality, the intervention contributes to a more supportive and accommodating campus environment.
The handover of the canopy extension project further highlights UPSA’s dedication to fostering a holistic university experience that supports the academic, social, and spiritual well-being of its community.
