UPSA to make coding a compulsory course for all students – VC

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, has announced an ambitious initiative to make coding a compulsory course for all undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The bold initiative is aimed at equipping graduates of the university with essential IT and computer programming skills to enable them thrive in the rapidly evolving global economy.

“We want to create an environment where every student who passes through UPSA must know basic coding regardless of their program of study,” Prof. Mawutor announced during an orientation programme for fresh students on Monday, January 27.

The initiative, he explained, is part of a broader vision to prepare students for the demands of the digital age and ensure they remain competitive in the job market.

Prof. Mawutor, who assumed office on January 2, highlighted the importance of technology skills, stating that coding fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability, which he believes are key attributes for success in the 21st century.

He stressed that by making coding a core part of its curriculum, “UPSA is positioning its graduates to lead in their fields and contribute meaningfully to the technological advancement of Ghana and beyond.”

He added that this forward-thinking initiative reaffirms UPSA’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and preparing students for the future.”

The Vice-Chancellor says his vision for UPSA includes leveraging IT to enhance organisational efficiency, promoting interdisciplinary research, fostering collaborations, and enhancing the university’s reputation as Africa’s leading business school.
