UPSA student develops innovative Digital Attendance System

A third-year Information Technology (IT) student at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Abdul Aziz Mansir, has developed a groundbreaking Location-Based Electronic Attendance System (LEAS), a class attendance and monitoring system.

Mansir created this system as his final-year project even before advancing to his fourth year.

The LEAS, which has been officially adopted by the university, uses geolocation technology to track students’ attendance in real time.

The system allows lecturers to verify whether students are physically present in class when marking attendance, eliminating the possibility of signing in from remote locations.

The project was supervised by Dr. Emmanuel Owusu Oware, the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of IT and Communication Studies, who guided Mansir in refining and implementing the system.

Speaking during UPSA’s 2025 matriculation ceremony on Friday, March 7, Vice-Chancellor Prof. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor acknowledged Nasir’s remarkable achievement, praising his innovation and forward-thinking approach.

He emphasised the importance of academic research in solving real-world problems and commended Nasir for his dedication to leveraging technology for institutional advancement.

“With this system, lecturers are now able to check class attendance in real time and determine if a student is signing in from the correct location,” Prof. Mawutor stated.

He further noted that LEAS will significantly reduce the university’s reliance on printed attendance sheets, cutting down administrative costs and improving efficiency.

Mansir’s innovation highlights the growing impact of student-led technological advancements at UPSA and underscores the university’s commitment to fostering creativity and practical solutions that enhance both academic and administrative processes.
