The management of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, has paid a courtesy call on the university’s founder, Nana J. K. Opoku Ampomah I, to honour his immense contribution to the establishment and growth of the institution.
The visit formed part of UPSA’s ongoing efforts to reconnect with key figures in its history, as the university prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary this year.
Prof. Mawutor paid glowing tribute to Nana Opoku Ampomah, describing him as the visionary behind the remarkable transformation of UPSA from a private professional training institution into a leading public university of national and global repute.

“All that UPSA is today—the success, the vision, and the impact—can be traced back to your foresight and commitment to education,” Prof. Mawutor stated.
He assured the founder of the university’s continuous support, noting that any personal needs or requests from Nana Opoku Ampomah would be treated as a top priority.
As part of his vision for inclusive development, Prof. Mawutor announced plans to introduce a new scholarship scheme in honour of the founder.
This, he explained, would be added to the existing scholarship programmes and would be dedicated exclusively to members of the Opoku Ampomah family.
“In addition to the scholarship scheme, UPSA will refund all tuition fees paid by your sons or grandchildren in the past. This is a small gesture to express our deep appreciation for the sacrifices you made and the support you continue to give, including the provision of land for the university’s development,” he added.
Prof. Mawutor also announced that preparations are underway to mark the university’s 60th anniversary.
He revealed that a planning committee has already been constituted to oversee the celebrations and ensure the founder’s legacy is prominently highlighted throughout the commemorative activities.
The meeting was attended by key members of the university’s management team, including the Registrar, Mrs. Lorraine Gyan; Pro-Vice-Chancellors, Prof. Samuel Antwi and Prof. Emmanuel Selase Asamoah; the Director of Finance, Mr. Nicholas Adjei; the Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Aba Lokko; and a leading UPSA alumnus, Mr Francis Dadzie.
