UPSA celebrates Culture Day with display of rich cultural diversity

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has observed its annual  Culture Day celebrations.

This year’s event dubbed: “Bridging Cultures, Shaping Futures” featured captivating cultural dances from six African countries, alongside performances from China, Korea, and Jamaica. There was also some food sampling and exhibitions.

In addition to the performance, the event witnessed insightful presentations, including one by the Ghana Immigration Service on immigration processes and another by the European Centre on mobility opportunities for Ghanaians.

International students of UPSA represented their countries through displays highlighting food, fashion, wildlife, art, geography, religion, historical landmarks, and ceremonial attire.

The Country Director of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council, (CWEIC). Mr. Ben Gomado-Cobblah, in his keynote address, stated that the theme for this year’s Cultural Day celebration aligns perfectly with that of the Commonwealth which is “Connecting Cultures.’

He pointed out that both themes underscore the significance of cultural diversity and its enriching effect on individuals and communities.

“Our various cultures and the ways we express them are what set us apart,” he said. “We proudly use music, dance, literature, art and other means to express our cultural identities as individuals and communities.”

The Pro Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, Prof John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, observed that celebrating culture takes more than a day, adding that it is an ongoing commitment to “honour each other’s culture, respect differences and promote inclusiveness.”

Miss Ivy Heward-Mills, the Director of the UPSA Centre for International Education and Collaboration (CIEC), also highlighted the significance of cultural diversity in uniting communities.

Notable dignitaries at the event were His Excellency Maher Kheir, Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Mr, Divine Owusu-Ansah, representing Hon. Mark Okraku-Mantey, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture and Mr Ben Gomado-Cobblah Country Director, Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council.

Also in attendance were, Mr. Kevoy Burton, President, Ghana Caribbean Association, Celebrity Dancehall Artiste Stonebwoy, Media personality Giovani Caleb, renowned Poet Nana Asaase, Prof. Patience Abor of the University of Ghana Business School, and Mr. Ebenezer Amuasi, Director of International Relations at Wisconsin University.
