UPSA among best four universities in Ghana in 2023 World University Rankings

The University of Professional Studies, Accra, has been named among the best four universities in Ghana in the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

UPSA retained its “reporter” status in the global rankings that measure an institution’s performance based on 13 carefully calibrated performance metrics across four areas, namely: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

The new ratings position UPSA as one of the most promising institutions in an emerging economy.

The University’s latest achievement comes barely a year after it was also ranked among the top three universities in Ghana in the 2022 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023, released on Wednesday, October 12, include 1,799 universities across 104 countries and regions, making it the largest and most diverse university ranking in the world.

This year’s rankings examined over 121 million citations from over 15.5 million academic articles, as well as survey answers from 40,000 scholars worldwide. The scheme also collected nearly 680,000 data points from over 2,500 universities that submitted data.

Africa saw a 36.6% participation increase this year, with rankings increasing from 71 to 97 institutions – the biggest increase of all continents.

In Ghana, three universities—University of Cape Coast, University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology—were ranked in the main rankings, while the University for Development Studies, together with the University of Health and Allied Sciences, were featured in the reporter status category.

In all, a total of 526 universities out of the 1799 institutions ranked in the 2023 edition were listed in the “reporter” status category.
