Thomas Asare, a UPSA alumnus, has been appointed as Assistant Secretary-General of the World Metrological Organisation (WMO).
He will work closely with the Deputy Secretary-General, forming a new executive management team under the leadership of WMO Secretary-General, Celeste Saulo.
Mr Asare currently serves as the Comptroller and Director of the Division of Financial and Administrative Management at the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in New York.
He is a finance and development executive with over 25 years of experience.
He has collaborated with multi-constituency governance structures, engaged with governments, and partnered with international organisations to craft and implement crucial development strategies to alleviate poverty and improve the lives of the world’s most vulnerable populations.
Prior to joining UNICEF, Mr. Asare held key positions in financial management, program planning, management advisory, and assurance services while collaborating with various international development organisations across Africa and Asia.
These organisations included the African Capacity Building Foundation (a specialised agency of the African Union), the USAID/West Africa Regional Office, and the CGIAR in Malaysia. He previously also served as an Assistant Auditor-General of the Ghana Audit Service.
Mr. Asare is currently a PhD candidate in Financial Governance at the University of South Africa. He pursued his professional accountancy studies at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, in Ghana.
He holds a Master of Science degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Northampton and a Master of Science in Audit and Consultancy from Birmingham City University.
He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).
He holds several other certifications and memberships, including membership in the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI), and the CFA Institute.
He is also a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), the Institute of Risk Management (IRM, UK), and the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA).
