UPSA admits record 12,000 fresh students for 2024/25 academic year

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has admitted a record-breaking 12,009 fresh students for the 2024/25 academic year—the highest intake in the university’s history.

The newly admitted students comprise 1,617 diploma students, 8,145 undergraduate students, 854 top-up students, 1,311 master’s degree students, and 82 doctorate (PhD) students.

Speaking at the 2025 Matriculation Ceremony on Friday, March 7, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, attributed the record admission numbers to UPSA’s growing reputation as a leading institution for professional and higher education in Ghana.

Prof. Mawutor further revealed that UPSA received a total of 22,209 applications and issued 17,553 admissions.

This, he said, brings the university’s total student population to 26,703, with a gender distribution of 48 percent females and 52 percent males.

The Vice-Chancellor welcomed the new students and encouraged them to fully leverage the academic and professional opportunities available at UPSA.

He emphasized the importance of using artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance learning rather than relying on it as a shortcut to academic success.

“The development of artificial intelligence is having a significant impact on today’s world,” Prof. Mawutor noted. “As students of this great university, the real temptation and danger will be how you choose to use AI as a tool to enhance your learning and not as a substitute.”

Prof. Mawutor further urged the freshmen to exercise caution when using social media and remain focused on their studies.

He also encouraged them to draw inspiration from the accomplishments of UPSA’s alumni, concluding that “hard work pays off—our alumni serve as a testament to this.”
