Dr Ummu Markwei is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Sociology and the Head of the Department of Business Administration at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, and has taught for over 14 years.

She holds a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Sociology and a Master of Philosophy Degree in Social Work, both from the University of Ghana, Legon. She is a Queen Elizabeth II Advance Scholar (University of New Brunswick, Canada) and a Carnegie Corporation of New York Scholar.

Her research interests include work-life-family balance, women in higher education, sexual violence, mental health, and women in leadership. Ummu’s academic publications have appeared in top-tier journals like the International Journal of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, the Journal of Child Sexual Abuse, Gender in Management and Children’s Geographies.

Dr Ummu Markwei serves as an external examiner for doctoral dissertations for reputable universities abroad and locally. Ummu Markwei has taught and supervised dissertations at various levels of tertiary education and consulted for renowned international and government organisations like GIZ, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, Ghana Telecom, the Ghana Employers Association and PLAN International Ghana. As a researcher, her goal is to conduct cutting-edge research to ensure gender equality and social inclusion in society for sustainable growth and development.
