Nurture the spirit of entrepreneurship – Daily Graphic editor to UPSA graduates

The editor of Graphic Communications Group Limited, Theophilus Yartey, has urged fresh graduates to cultivate the spirit of entrepreneurship as they step into the next chapter of their lives.

Highlighting the importance of innovation, the veteran journalist emphasised the need for graduates to leverage their acquired skillsets to contribute to Ghana’s economic landscape through entrepreneurial ventures.

Mr Yartey gave the advice in a commencement address to the 2023 class of the Faculty of Management Studies at UPSA, which saw some 1,566 students graduate with various bachelor degrees and diplomas.

Mr Yartey said young graduates should break away from traditional expectations and discard the notion of seeking employment solely from the government.

Instead, he urged them to explore the vast opportunities in entrepreneurship, adding that their skills could be a driving force in creating employment for themselves and others while contributing to the nation’s development.

“Today the world acknowledges start-ups as the engine of economic growth and job creation and Ghana desperately needs your entrepreneurial energy hinged on new ideas, innovation, and relentless determination to succeed,” he said.

“It is the spirit of entrepreneurship that has led to the birth of some of the most successful companies and industries we see today. From Silicon Valley to emerging and frontier markets, entrepreneurs have disrupted traditional business models, revolutionised industries, and changed the way we work.”

Mr Yartey emphasised the importance of staying abreast of technological advancements, urging graduates to integrate technology into their entrepreneurial endeavours.

He encouraged them to embrace continuous learning to enhance their professional and personal development, adding that they should not “lose sight of their passion and purpose.”

The Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, Professor Abednego Amartey, congratulated the graduates on their achievements, stating that “we are proud of you and we look forward to hearing about your future accomplishments.”.

He outlined recent efforts and measures undertaken by the management of UPSA to enhance the overall collegiate experience of its students.

These initiatives include the execution of critical infrastructure projects, notably the construction of a police station, footbridges, drainage systems, and access roads.

Prof. Amartey stressed that these endeavours have been undertaken to bolster security both within and around the university while facilitating enhanced accessibility to campus.
