Members of the La Traditional Council have commended the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) for its continuing efforts at empowering local communities through education.
This was at a meeting between UPSA’s management team and the La Traditional Council.
The engagement forms part of UPSA’s broader effort to strengthen partnerships with traditional authorities.
Speaking on behalf of the Council, La Shikitele, Nii Adjei Koofeh IV congratulated Prof. Mawutor on his appointment and expressed the Council’s appreciation for UPSA’s dedication to empowering local communities through education.
Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor reaffirmed the University’s commitment to community development and inclusive education, particularly for the Ga communities.
Prof. Mawutor, who assumed office in January this year, took the opportunity to formally introduce himself to the custodians of the land and seek their blessings for a successful tenure.
He highlighted UPSA’s ongoing support for local communities, including initiatives such as admission concessions and the Ga Dangme Scholarship Scheme, which benefits students from Ga-speaking communities, including La.
He also announced plans to promote the Ga language by deploying UPSA students to community basic schools to teach the language as part of the university’s community service efforts.
The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by several members of the university’s leadership team, including Mrs. Lorraine Gyan, Registrar; Prof. Samuel Antwi, Pro-Chancellor; Mrs. Aba Lokko, Director of Public Affairs; and Dr. Gerald Nyanyofio, a lecturer in the Department of Business Administration.
The UPSA delegation was warmly received by prominent members of the La Traditional Council, including La Mankralo, Nii Obodai Adai IV; La Shikitele, Nii Adjei Koofeh IV; La Akwashongtse, Nii Yemo Din II; and Agbawe Mantse, Miyemli Ni Aba Nii Asua Oweeni II.
Also present were Nii Kotey Amli IV, Klanaa Mantse; Nii Anum Tetteh, La Otseame; and Prof. Ablade Glover, an advisor to the Council.
The Council encouraged the university to explore additional avenues for empowering the youth, particularly through expanded access to scholarships and skill development initiatives.
