The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has officially inaugurated its Student Chapter of the Institute of Public Relations (IPR) Ghana.
The IPR-UPSA Student Chapter is aimed at connecting students with industry professionals while providing them with mentorship and networking opportunities.
It also seeks to provide members with practical experiences through internships and workshops to build their capacity and enhance their transition into the workforce.
Vice President of IPR Ghana, Mr. Donald Gwira, underscored the importance of cultivating skilled public relations practitioners in today’s rapidly evolving communication landscape.
He emphasised that the establishment of the student chapter marks a significant milestone for both UPSA and the future of public relations in Ghana.
Mr Gwira articulated the critical role that public relations plays in nation-building, stating, “Effective PR shapes perceptions, builds trust, and manages reputations, which are essential for national progress.”
He urged the students to embrace continuous learning and adaptability, stressing the need to keep pace with advancements in technology and digital communication.
“As aspiring public relations professionals, you must develop a mindset of continuous learning and adaptability,” Mr Gwira said.
“The industry is rapidly changing with advancements in technology, digital communication, and social media. The traditional methods of PR are evolving, and we must be prepared to embrace new tools, techniques, and strategies that can drive impactful communication.”
Coordinator for the IPR Student Chapter and Director of the UPSA Centre for International Education and Collaboration, Ivy Heward Mills, expressed her excitement about the new initiative.
She highlighted the wealth of learning and networking opportunities available to members while reaffirming IPR Ghana’s commitment to supporting the chapter, encouraging students to leverage this platform for both personal and professional growth.
Head of the Communication Studies Department, Dr. Mrs. Adwoa Amankwah, expressed her gratitude to the IPR team for their continuous support to the UPSA.
She emphasised the department’s dedication to empowering the next generation of public relations leaders through education and ethical practice.
“As a department, we have been looking forward to the launch of the UPSA student chapter of IPR,” she said. “And for us here at UPSA, it is a significant step toward shaping the future of public relations in Ghana while preparing our students to meet the challenges of an increasingly complex and interconnected world.”
The inauguration ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Dr. Godfred Akrofi, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Studies, Dr. Justice Issah Abdullah, Patron of the Communication Students’ Association (ComSSA), as well as students, staff, and some faculty members.
