The National Secretariat of the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, on Wednesday, 15 April 2026, to express appreciation for his support during their tenure and to reaffirm the Association’s commitment to graduate student welfare and institutional advancement.
The visit also provided an opportunity for the outgoing national leadership to reflect on its stewardship as it prepares to hand over at the Association’s upcoming national congress. Against that backdrop, the delegation shared key milestones chalked during its term, while also drawing attention to pressing concerns affecting graduate students across the country, including postgraduate fee payment challenges, issues surrounding domestic student elections in some universities, and access to bursary support.

Despite these concerns, the leadership reiterated its determination to pursue reforms and promote best practices that will improve the academic and general welfare of graduate students nationwide. It stressed the importance of building university environments that are supportive, inclusive and responsive to the needs of postgraduate students.
Receiving the delegation, Professor Mawutor commended the GRASAG leadership for its service and contribution to graduate student representation. He emphasised the importance of selfless leadership in addressing institutional challenges, noting that, “you will need to be selfless to put things right, especially when things are not going on right.”
The Vice-Chancellor further underscored the need for higher education institutions to position themselves as centres of innovation and relevance. He highlighted the critical role of postgraduate research in national development and pointed to ongoing efforts to ensure that academic research is translated into practical solutions that respond to societal needs.

The delegation was led by GRASAG National President, Jimmy Mawuse Adange, and included Speaker of Senate, Ebenezer Gakpo Gabson, and Financial Controller, Emmanuel Wesom Achio. Also present was UPSA GRASAG President, John Mwiniasaa Nounyah, reflecting the close ties between the national body and the University.
The visit marked not only the close of one phase of leadership within GRASAG, but also a renewed affirmation of the shared responsibility of student leaders and university authorities in strengthening graduate education in Ghana.
