The Research and Consultancy Centre of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA-RCC), has delivered a capacity-building workshop aimed at strengthening research, academic publishing and doctoral education at Akatsi College of Education. The two-day programme, held from Tuesday, 14 July to Wednesday, 15 July 2026, brought together tutors, doctoral students, prospective PhD candidates, early-career researchers and senior administrators.
Organised as part of UPSA’s community engagement and knowledge-sharing initiatives, the workshop equipped participants with practical competencies in academic publishing, doctoral research management and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in teaching and research.
The engagement was led by the Acting Director of UPSA-RCC, Professor Alexander D. K. Preko. He was supported by Professor Rufai Haruna Kilu, Dr Adam Salifu and Dr Timothy King Avordeh, who facilitated a series of presentations, mentoring sessions, group discussions, practical exercises and question-and-answer sessions.
The facilitators guided participants through the process of developing viable doctoral research topics, constructing compelling problem statements and ensuring alignment among research objectives, questions and methodological approaches.
Other areas covered included dissertation planning, progress monitoring, effective supervisor–student relationships, ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence in academic writing, and preparation for proposal defence and the final viva voce examination.
As part of the practical component, participants developed individual dissertation action plans outlining the key activities and timelines required to advance their research. The exercise was designed to promote accountability, improve academic productivity and support the timely completion of doctoral studies.
The workshop further provided a platform for participants to discuss common challenges associated with doctoral education and receive targeted guidance from experienced academics and researchers.
The engagement underscores UPSA-RCC’s commitment to extending the University’s research expertise beyond its campus, fostering institutional collaboration and contributing to the development of a robust research culture within Ghana’s Colleges of Education.
