The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra, Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, has paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Minister for Finance and Member of Parliament for the Asuogyaman Constituency, Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem. The engagement, held on 11 May 2026, was to formally brief the Deputy Minister on the University’s decision to establish a new campus at Gyakiti, near Akosombo, in the Eastern Region.
The meeting formed part of the University’s preliminary stakeholder engagements aimed at opening discussions on the proposed campus and securing the support of key actors whose involvement would be critical to the successful execution of the project.

Professor Mawutor said the proposed expansion forms part of UPSA’s strategic agenda to broaden its physical footprint, improve access to quality tertiary education, and extend the University’s academic and developmental impact beyond Accra.
He disclosed that the University had acquired land at Gyakiti-Akosombo for the development of the new campus, adding that the initiative reflects UPSA’s commitment to creating wider educational opportunities for communities across the country.
The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by the Registrar, Mrs Lorraine Gyan; Professor Samuel Antwi; the Acting Director of Administration, Dr Mrs Leticia Akyeampong; the Director of Counselling, Dr Stephen Acheampong; and the President of the UPSA Global Alumni Association, Mr Francis Dadzie.

Receiving the delegation, Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem welcomed the initiative and expressed strong enthusiasm about the University’s proposed presence in the constituency.
“I am excited about this project. My constituency, despite having seven secondary schools, does not have a single tertiary education institution, so I am personally excited that UPSA has taken this bold step,” the Deputy Minister stated.
Hon. Ampem pledged his support for the initiative, noting that any project aimed at expanding access to higher education deserved the backing of stakeholders committed to the development of the constituency and the country at large.

He described the proposed campus as a laudable intervention with the potential to contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of Asuogyaman and surrounding communities.
The Deputy Minister further called for the active involvement of all relevant stakeholders to ensure the smooth implementation and successful completion of the project.
