UPSA Vice-Chancellor urges fresh students to embrace entrepreneurship at 2026 orientation

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof John K. M. Mawutor, has urged fresh students to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset as they begin their academic journey, stressing that the future of work demands innovation, initiative and ethical leadership.

He made the call at a pre-academic orientation organised for newly admitted undergraduate and diploma students from the Faculty of Accounting and Finance and the UPSA Law School on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

Addressing the students, Prof Mawutor underscored the importance of entrepreneurship in today’s rapidly changing global economy, marked by unemployment challenges and digital disruption.

“Entrepreneurship is no longer optional; it is essential,” the Vice Chancellor stated, explaining that universities must prepare graduates to respond creatively to evolving labour market realities rather than rely solely on traditional employment pathways.

He noted that while many graduates aspire to secure jobs after completing their studies, the current economic climate requires a broader mindset.

“We are preparing students not only to seek jobs but to create them,” he said, adding that students must begin developing problem-solving and opportunity-creating skills from their first year on campus.

Prof Mawutor explained that UPSA has taken deliberate steps to embed entrepreneurship and ethical grounding into its academic framework.

He announced that the University has introduced two mandatory courses — Foundation of Ethics and Entrepreneurship — to ensure that all students graduate with both professional competence and strong character.

Adding his voice, the Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance, Prof. Isaac Boadi, encouraged students to take ownership of their academic and professional development from the outset.

“You are the authors of your own lives, and the choices you make from today will shape not only your academic success but the professionals you become in the future,” Prof Boadi said.

He noted that the Faculty is committed to providing students with both the theoretical and practical training needed to excel in the accounting and finance profession.

Prof. Boadi further urged the students to actively engage their lecturers and seek guidance whenever necessary.

“I encourage you to feel free to consult our expert faculty as you navigate your academic journey; engaging your lecturers early is the surest way to stay informed, focused, and on the path to excellence,” he said.

The orientation formed part of UPSA’s efforts to prepare fresh students for academic life while equipping them with the mindset and values needed to succeed beyond graduation.

During the orientation, the students were taken through key aspects of university life, including navigating academic life at UPSA, the use of the Learning Management System (LMS), the grading system, fee payment and registration procedures, as well as available security and health services, library resources, and others.
