Newly enrolled PhD students undergo pre-academic orientation

The Office of Doctoral Programmes (ODP) of the University of Professional Studies, Accra, has organised an orientation programme for newly admitted PhD students for the 2024/25 academic year.

The two-day pre-academic orientation was aimed at equipping the new students with the necessary tools, resources, and information to ensure a smooth transition into their PhD studies.

It also sought to familiarise them with the academic environment, support services, and expectations as they embark on their research journey.

Addressing the fresh students, Dean of ODP, Professor Raymond Dziwornu, congratulated them on their admission and welcomed them into the university community.

He expressed his enthusiasm about the new cohort, highlighting UPSA’s dedication to fostering an environment of academic excellence and innovation.

For his part, the Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, Prof Abednego F. O. Amartey, advised the students to stay focused and committed to their academic pursuits.

He also urged them to uphold high ethical standards, remain professional, and avoid the temptation of plagiarism, which is a critical academic offence.

Director of Research and Consultancy, Prof Abigail Opoku Mensah, delivered a comprehensive presentation that provided the students with step-by-step guidelines on what to expect as they embark on their PhD journey.

She encouraged them to strike a balance between their academic responsibilities and personal lives to maintain overall well-being.

Other speakers included Prof Samuel Antwi, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies; Mr James Ami-Narh, Director of ISTD, who spoke on the university’s ICT resources; Dr Edwin Tetteh Ayernor, Director of DIMC, who guided the students on the use of learning management systems, and Dr Isaac Newman Arthur, Medical Director, who addressed the importance of managing stress throughout the academic journey.

The Director of Academic Affairs, Mr Anthony Afeadie, provided insights into course registration procedures, assessment methods, and examination rules, while Dr Philomena Dadzie, Dean of Students, and Mr Ndebilla Wilson, Deputy Director of Finance, also shared relevant information to ensure a smooth academic experience.

They spoke on topics including rules and regulations of the university as well as fees and financial services available to students.
