International students at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) were treated to an exclusive cocktail get-together at the Rotunda of the Central Administration Building on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
The event, organised by the Centre for International Education and Collaboration (CIEC), aimed at fostering a sense of belonging within the international student community.
It also afforded them a unique opportunity to meet and interact with high-ranking university officials, including the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Deans, Directors, and Heads of Department.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, Prof John K. M. Mawutor, encouraged the international students to be exemplary ambassadors of the university.
He emphasised the significance of upholding good character and professionalism throughout their academic journey.
Prof. Mawutor also stressed the importance of fostering positive relationships with the local community, faculty, and fellow students.
He urged the students not only to focus on their academic pursuits but also to actively engage in extracurricular activities and community service, to enhance their overall collegiate experience.
“UPSA embraces cultural diversity, and each one of you has an opportunity to showcase the rich cultural diversity and academic excellence that UPSA stands for,” Prof Mawutor said.
“You are not only representing yourselves but also your respective countries and our esteemed institution, so I urge you to exude professionalism wherever you go and be decent in your appearance at all times.”
He reminded the students that their behaviour and actions, both on and off-campus, contribute to shaping the perception and reputation of the university.
Prof Mawutor encouraged them to embrace cultural exchange and understanding while reiterating the importance of respectful engagement with their peers and the exploration of different perspectives.
“By embodying these values, you will not only contribute positively to the university’s global reputation but also attract and inspire future generations of international students who will strive for excellence and become exemplary ambassadors just like you,” the Pro-VC said.
For her part, Director of CIEC, Ms. Ivy Heward-Mills, said the initiative is evidence of an ongoing commitment by UPSA to enhance the international experience of its students by bridging the gap between students and university officials.
She emphasised the university’s resolve to nurture a supportive and inclusive environment for all, regardless of cultural backgrounds.
“As the director for CIEC, my utmost priority is to ensure that our international students feel welcomed, supported, and at home here,” Ms Heward-Mills said.
